What we saw underscored the level of engagement the audience has with Essence. People were saying this is not what they expected from Essence. But other black women were saying, ‘Why does it matter?’ It was a wonderful conversation. Our take-away is, we commit ourselves each and every day to serving her, and that’s the basis of our bond. Every person on our staff is not black, and we’ve always had a level of diversity over the decades. That allows us to have people be part of our organization that have something to add.
